I saw this setup by accident on one of my user’s computers and decided to post it just in case anyone is wondering why their column headers show numbers instead of letters in Excel. This is not commonly used but I could imagine that there may be a need for it.

Excel is setup with references that we all should know that contains a combination of both the column letter and row number, example A1.

Another method of referencing contains both rows and columns using numbers. The numbers are differentiated by using the letters “R” for Row and “C” for Column. The selection of row 3 and column 6 would be referred to as R3C6.

To enable R1C1 please use the following steps:

Click File and then select Options.

Click on Formulas.

Select the R1C1 Reference Style check box.

Click on OK.

This is a tricking one indeed because timing is everything. However, don’t be worried if you don’t get it on the first time because that is just the way things are with this method of flashing on this router. This is well worth it with all of the features you will have available to you.
Disclaimer: try this at your own risk; I am not responsible for your actions.
Warning: Reverting back to the original firmware may not be an option once you install Tomato, make sure this suits your needs.
Vista: will require the installation of the tftp client under Add/Remove-Windows Features
The procedures below are based on the presumption that you will be upgrading your Buffalo router with the original firmware.

Download Tomato and extract it. Copy and paste the tomato.trx file on the root of your C: drive.

Perform a hard reset by unplugging the power adapter from the router, then press and hold the reset button and plug in the power adapter. Continue to hold the reset button for one minute.

Insert a network cable from your computer’s Ethernet port to LAN port #1 on the router. This will not work wirelessly.

On your computer go to the Start menu and select on Control Panel, then Network Connections, then right click on your Ethernet card and click on Properties. On the Local Area Connection Properties window click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click on Properties and change your settings as follows:
IP Address: 192.168.11.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.11.1
Click OK.

Unplug the power adapter to your router.

Open up the command prompt by clicking on your Start menu and select Run then type in CMD and press the Enter key (if you don’t see Run, press your Windows key + R key).

Type in C: and press the Enter key then type in CD\and press the Enter key. You should now see “C:\>“.

Type in “tftp -i 192.168.11.1 put tomato.trx” (Do Not press the Enter key as yet).

Plug in the power adapter to your router.

Quickly press the Enter key when you see that your computer has established a connection to the router.

If You receive a timeout error unplug and plug in the power adapter and repeat steps 8 through 10. If you received successful message wait for at least 2 minutes for the router to be successfully flashed.

Preform another hard reset (see step #2).

The router’s default address is 192.168.1.1. Change your network settings back to “Obtain Automatically” in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties window. You may access the router by typing in the IP address via web browser.
Username: root
Password: admin

Enjoy!
